The Squadron is unique in that its name does not come from the town in which it is based, but from a person. We are proud to be named ‘Mannock’ Squadron after the local World War One Fighter Ace, Major Edward ‘Mick’ Mannock VC. Major Mannock is regarded as one of the greatest fighter aces of the war and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross after being killed in action in 1918. As the Commanding Officer of 85 Squadron RAF he was an inspirational leader and someone that the squadron is proud to be named after.
